17 Feb 08 - Disaster Training - Article from EMSresponder.com

(contd) - Those are the events county staffers will react to over the course of three days beginning April 21. It's only a drill, but it's a big drill. Think of it as the Olympics of emergency management.

The county is one of two places in the U.S. participating in the National Guard exercise called "Vigilant Guard." The simulation is estimated to bring 2,000 people, more than 200 vehicles and millions of dollars to the county during the exercise.

The simulation will be divided into 50 missions spread across the county. Over the three days,...Continue the article from EMSresponder.com...

01 June 2007 - AT Exercise at North Field
The annual training exercise at North Field was successful but cut short due to the tropical depression, Barry. The impending "storm" scenario was excellent training since this is exactly what we prepare for. The tent city that was set up in advance was "struck" and packed away before any significant wind and rainfall came into camp. Weather radios were closely monitored and a decision to break camp was made just before it got severe. Colonel Hudson was the OIC and prepared the OPORD for this exercise. Colonel Stidom commanded the communications section and provided the SOI for this training. General Lacy, along with other Brigade Commanders, were in attendance and met with dignitaries from the National Guard. Additionally, the Provost Section secured the front entrance and checked ID's of anyone entering the facility. WIS-TV Channel 10 provided news coverage on Saturday's events and ran the story on the 6 and 11pm news on Saturday evening. Click Here for WIS-TV's coverage...

6 May 2007 - Hurricane Preparedness Exercise
Guardsmen were called to alert for the annual Hurricane Preparedness exercise and were to report to their pre-determined locations no later than 0800 on 5 May. This was a State-wide alert and involved all State Guard personnel. The Signal Detachment established a voice HF communications Net and served as Net Control for the Division Training Drill. Each location reported in by 0930. These locations were strategically planned at Rest Areas and Welcome Centers across the State.

In an actual emergency, the Governor, at his discretion, will initiate a lane reversal, in the affected area, allowing for four lanes of traffic to flow in one direction. Past experiences have shown South Carolinians that failure to enact a lane reversal can prove disastrous for motorist.

This training will prepare Guardsmen for an actual weather, or other, emergency and will provide the Highway Patrol necessary recourses to carry out such an extensive mission.

An AAR followed the exercise and all sections reported on their involvement. The Olympia Armory served as the Tactical Operation Center (TOC) during the exercise.

23 March 2007 - Clark's Hill Training Site Training
The March, 07 FTX at Clark's Hill Training Site was a success. Soldiers from all Brigades were in attendance. National Guard personnel assisted State Guard troops with Land Navigation and the Obstacle Course. Fortunately, there were no injuries and everyone returned home safely. Col. Amos Hykes is planning to use this facility again next year.
